Style
Kevin Winzelers’ photography is beautiful. It is very detailed, even though every shot is an action shot. To capture these images he uses a Canon 5D Mark II as his main with a back up of a Canon 7D. His style is much like most sports illustrated photos are. They capture people in the heat of the moment taking on a challenge. I think of Kevin Winzeler as the modern day Neil Leifer. They are both sports and action sports photographers, while also capturing the downtime activities like getting set up to hunt and making plays in the huddle.

Philosophy
Kevin is a major advocate of outdoor activities and sports. When interviewed he said that he loves taking pictures of “Anything that has a sense of freedom, energy, movement, the outdoors, and activity.” He loves catching people in their natural habitats doing what they love in an athletic form. Kevin himself has always been an athlete, being proficient in skiing and golf, while also enjoying cycling and hunting. He realized that he was happiest when he was doing something outdoors and athletic, so he decided to capture it with photos.

Influences
Last year for my photographer report I reported on Neil Leifer. I thought that he was the coolest photographer out there, being able to be on the front lines and getting to see everything. Kevin Winzeler reminds me a lot of Neil Leifer. They both have inspired me to take action shots when I get the chance. I believe that Kevin Winzeler is a great role model, because he does what he loves while making money and having a lot of fun. I also side with him a lot on the activities side. I get very annoyed at lazy and inactive people. My favorite place in the whole world is a my grandpa’s house where there is 140 acres of farmland. I love taking photos there because it is the woods and it is all natural.

SPG - Browning
I have always liked guns when my parents haven’t. Last year I was able to convince them to let me get an air rifle that looks like a Sniper. I really liked Kevin’s picture of the hunter getting his post ready to shoot. For this picture I used a great friend and had him pose with the sniper like he was hunting. This is different because my friend had no intention of shooting, because sadly we live in the suburbs, while in Kevin’s photo they were actually in the wild hunting. http://www.kevinwinzeler.com/PORTFOLIOS/SPG-BROWNING/i-hRd8mtL/A |
Utah Football
My sport is lacrosse. I have played it since 4th grade and I absolutely love it. It is still a relatively unpopular sport, so Kevin has no pictures of lacrosse players. I knew that I had to use a lacrosse photo for one of my pictures, so I decided to adapt off of one of Kevin’s. He has a very cool photo of a Utah Football player sprinting, so I transferred it over to lacrosse and had my friend shoot with a lacrosse stick. http://www.kevinwinzeler.com/PORTFOLIOS/UTAH-FOOTBALL-hall-of-fame/i-WqNNcs9/A |

Possibly my favorite photo by Kevin Winzeler is the German Shorthaired Pointer with his owner who is holding a bow. I just happen to have a German Shorthaired pointer myself, and a bow. Obviously my images aren’t as good, I tried getting the best “natural” environment possible. I am going to reshoot these at my grandpa’s house, where it has lots of woodland. http://www.kevinwinzeler.com/PORTFOLIOS/NEW-WORK/i-WqXC2q4/A |
I had a lot of fun taking these pictures. I was able to use my dad's high quality camera and I had a beautiful natural background. In these pictures I focused a lot on balance. I tried getting two trees in every picture, and I aligned the person in the middle of each photograph. Lastly, I made sure to take all my pictures in the evening.
